About ERC Rome.
ERC Rome builds on Italy’s long-standing tradition of humanistic inquiry and scientific excellence. Situated in one of Europe’s most intellectually and historically significant cities, the centre provides a space where rigorous scholarship is supported by a collegial and inclusive academic culture.
ERC Rome focuses on two principal research areas:
- theology, religious studies, and canon law,
- and artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and computer science.
The first research area explores topics such as Christian theology, comparative religious studies, ecclesiastical history, the philosophy of religion, and canonical legal frameworks. Scholars investigate the role of religious traditions in contemporary societies, the historical development of belief systems, and the normative structures that shape religious life.
The second area supports research in artificial intelligence and its applications, cybersecurity, ethical and legal implications of digital technologies, machine learning, cryptography, and computational theory. It also welcomes interdisciplinary work at the intersection of technology, society, and ethics.
ERC Rome offers researchers a high degree of academic freedom and flexibility. Research positions do not include teaching obligations, allowing scholars to fully concentrate on their projects. The centre actively supports conference participation, publication efforts, and international collaboration. Above all, ERC Rome strives to create an intellectually rich and collegial environment where researchers feel at home.
Researchers with a strong interest in theology, religion, or emerging technologies are warmly encouraged to connect with us and explore opportunities within our intellectually rich and collegial community.
